Trailers hide their problems in the frame and floor, not the paint. What to inspect on flatbeds, tippers, box trailers, reefers and tankers — and the certificates that make or break the deal.
Trailers are the most under-inspected purchase in transport. Buyers who would strip a tractor to the frame will hand over money for a trailer after a walk-around — and then discover the cracked crossmembers, soft floor and out-of-date tank certificate the walk-around missed. A trailer has no engine to distract you: it IS the frame, axles and floor. Inspect it that way.

Reefer and tanker rule: no document, no deal
A reefer without unit service records is an unknown engine purchase — price the unit at overhaul. A tanker without a current statutory test certificate cannot legally carry product until re-certified, and failed certification can mean scrap. In both cases the paperwork IS the value.
Verify title/registration matches the seller and any finance is cleared — trailers are financed as often as tractors and lien surprises are common. On price: trailers depreciate slower than trucks because there is less to wear, which means a sound 10-year-old flatbed is a rational purchase in a way a 10-year-old city truck may not be. Use the model, age and — for reefers — unit hours to anchor against real transaction data, and price every deferred repair you found into the offer.

Reefer diesel units typically run 15,000–25,000 hours before major overhaul with good servicing. Under 10,000 hours with records is comfortable; approaching 20,000 without documented major work should be priced with an overhaul in mind. Always run a pull-down test to temperature before buying.
Yes — with no engine and driveline to wear, trailers depreciate more slowly. A structurally sound 10-year-old flatbed remains a fully rational working purchase, which is why clean older trailers command firmer prices than trucks of the same age.
A current statutory test/inspection certificate appropriate to the product carried (pressure/leakage testing regimes vary by jurisdiction and cargo). Without it the tanker cannot legally operate until re-certified — and a failed re-certification can render it scrap. Verify before paying.
Structural corrosion and cracked crossmembers hidden under fresh underseal or paint, followed by soft or rotten floors in box trailers and tippers. Both are found in ten minutes with a torch and a screwdriver from underneath — which is exactly why most buyers never find them.
