Machinery risk-control framework
Use this framework to structure a site-specific risk assessment. It does not replace the machine manual, engineering validation, workplace procedure or competent safety advice.
Remove the hazard, task or exposure from the design or work plan.
Use a less hazardous process, material, energy source or machine.
Separate people from danger with guards, interlocks, isolation and safe access.
Control work through competence, procedures, permits, supervision and scheduling.
Select and maintain PPE for the residual risk; do not use it as the first control.
Define intended use; identify foreseeable misuse; review guarding, controls, access, energy, stability, noise, emissions and documentation.
Plan disassembly, lifting, transport restraints, stored-energy control and preservation. Record machine condition before release.
Confirm foundations, clearances, utilities, ventilation, fire protection, traffic separation and emergency access.
Complete risk assessment, safeguarding validation, electrical checks, commissioning tests, operator training and emergency drills.
Use pre-use checks, defect reporting, supervision, preventive maintenance and controlled overrides.
Identify every energy source; isolate, lock, verify zero energy, control stored energy and test before return to service.
Stop, preserve evidence, reassess risk, validate controls and authorise restart.
General educational information only. Safety duties and required controls depend on the machine, task, site and jurisdiction. Use a competent person and current official requirements. In an emergency, follow the site emergency plan and contact local emergency services. Last reviewed 3 October 2026.
