A low hour reading feels like proof that a machine has an easy life left. It is not proof. A machine can sit outside, idle for short cycles, miss time-based service or spend every working hour in dust, salt, heat or heavy loads. Another machine with higher hours may have worked steadily under disciplined maintenance. The meter matters, but it needs witnesses.
Ask the records to explain the hours
- Service invoices showing dates, readings, fluids, filters and parts.
- Major engine, transmission, hydraulic, spindle, battery or control work.
- Inspection, calibration or load-test reports relevant to the machine.
- Recurring faults and recommended work that was postponed.
- Ownership, serial plate and manual details matching the machine.
A missing record does not automatically make a machine bad. Small operators may maintain equipment well without a perfect digital file. It does increase uncertainty. Ask who did the work, request parts invoices and compare wear at pedals, pins, seats, controls and attachments with the displayed hours.
The next service belongs in your offer
The useful question is not only what has been done, but what becomes due after delivery. A bargain can lose its advantage if tyres, a battery, spindle work or a major hour-based service is close. Put known near-term costs into the offer instead of arguing about the meter alone.
