Used VMC Buying Guide: How to Buy a Vertical Machining Center
A used VMC can double a shop’s capacity for a third of new price — or become the most expensive mistake on your floor. Spindle, ways, control and tool changer: what to check and what to pay for.

The vertical machining centre is the workhorse of every job shop I have supplied in twenty-three years — and the machine most SME owners buy used, because a good used VMC at a third of new price is how small shops grow. It is also where I have seen the most costly mistakes, because a VMC hides its problems better than any manual machine. This guide is the inspection I do before I let a customer pay.
The four systems that decide the machine
Spindle. Ask for spindle hours and power-on hours separately, listen to it run through the full RPM range (a warming rumble or whine at speed means bearings), and if possible get a test cut with a surface-finish check. A spindle rebuild is the single biggest bill on a used VMC.
Ways and ballscrews. Check backlash on all three axes (the control’s diagnostic screens or a dial indicator), and look at the way covers and wipers — torn covers let chips grind the ways underneath. Uneven table movement or a groan in one axis zone means way wear.
Control. The control generation decides parts availability, programmer familiarity and resale — see our . A current Fanuc, Siemens or Haas control adds real value; a dead-brand control subtracts it, whatever the iron is like.
Tool changer. Cycle the ATC through every pocket, twice. Hesitation, misalignment or an alarm on a specific pocket is carousel or arm wear — fixable, but priced in hours of a specialist’s time.
Always inspect under power
A VMC that is "in storage, was running when decommissioned" is a machine you cannot verify — assume the worst on spindle and control. Machines demonstrated under power with a test cut sell for more because they are worth more. If the seller cannot power it, price accordingly or bring a specialist.
Reading the machine’s history
Ask what the machine made. A VMC that spent its life on aluminium parts in a two-shift shop has a very different spindle and way life from one that hogged steel dies. Check the alarm history in the control (crash and overload alarms are recorded on most), look at the table for weld marks and crash dents, and check the sheet metal around the spindle head — repairs there usually mean the head met a vice at speed. Honest sellers disclose crashes and show the repair invoice; silence plus fresh paint is your answer.
Brands, and what a used VMC should cost
Haas is the used-market benchmark — parts pricing is published, service is everywhere, and resale is liquid. Mazak, DMG Mori and Okuma bring higher-grade iron and hold spindle accuracy longer, at a price premium. In India, BFW, Jyoti and AMS machines offer real value with local support, while imported Taiwanese brands (Hartford, YCM, Feeler) are the popular middle ground. Rule of thumb: a clean 8–12-year-old VMC from a supported brand with a current-generation control typically trades at 25–40% of new price — the machine-specific value swing is nearly all spindle condition and control generation.
Budget beyond the machine: rigging and transport, foundation/levelling, power connection, and first-year maintenance typically add 10–20% to the purchase price.
Tooling included in the deal (holders, vices, 4th axis) is worth real money — itemise it in the negotiation.
A machine still under power at the seller’s works is worth a premium over an identical machine on a trader’s floor — provenance you can verify.
